One year is over, another is just beginning. We can look back and reflect on every success and every shortfall of 2011, or we can look ahead and plan to do a better job in 2012. We can plan to be closer to those we love, even though the miles separate us. We can plan to educate ourselves with new ideas, so we can make good, intelligent decisions. We can plan to share our lives and our resources so that some one else may be able to get just a little more out of their lives. We can plan on communicating more directly with each other to avoid misunderstandings and hurt feelings. In 2012 we can plan on a being a better someone to someone else.

I come from a big family. There are 7 children and currently 18 grandchildren. There are husbands and wives, in- laws and outlaws and now there are 3 great grand children – all direct descendants of my parents. It’s a houseful! Every year we celebrate our holidays together on New Years Day. This year we had so much more to celebrate on January 1st. We celebrated 3 weddings, 1 birth, the holidays of course, 3 graduations, 4 new jobs, a 50th birthday and continued good health for everyone there. We played games, sang songs, ate great food, drank a toast, got caught up with each other; it was all wonderful. All these milestones in our lives are some of the best times to show some one how much you care about them. I still choose to celebrate these times with flowers….

We had a bridal bouquet for Sandra (one of the new brides), decorations and poinsettia plants to spruce up the house for the holidays. We presented bouquets of congratulations for the graduates and those with new-found employment, a special gift basket for my 50 year old brother Tom, and a vase of mixed spring flowers for my mother (who struggles with her health daily). Flowers can convey your thoughts and emotions as well as any other gift. They are always warmly received.

After this weekend and all the festivities, we will all return home to our successes and short falls of our new year. I hope the successes far out number the short falls. We will remember the weekend we had together in January. It will create a smile on our faces. No one can take that from us.

May your 2012 be filled with success, good health, and happiness. May you and your family have memorable times together. When you need flowers to celebrate the milestones in your family, please give us a call. Thank You.

Happy New Year!

“Summertime and the living is easy, fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high. . .” Cole Porter – Porgy & Bess

I wish I had a dollar for every time I sang this song. Remember summertime 30 – 35 years ago? We spent entire days on our bikes, either at the creek or at the pool. We really never worried about too much…we just needed to be home in time for supper – remember? We always sat down together for supper in the evenings. There were baseball games and roller skating at the park when I was younger. We would tie the laces of our skates together and get back on our bikes again. I can hear my mother saying “Just be home by 10 PM. Don’t make me come and get you!”.

Summertime was the best time of year as a teenager in a small town in Pennsylvania. There were festivals and carnivals in town and when they were over the fair would start. Ahhh, good times!

Obviously, The Fourth of July was the highlight of the summer. Fireworks, hotdogs, burgers, lawn chairs and the community band playing John Phillip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever”. How can you not love the Fourth of July? It’s the day we celebrate our independence. It’s a day to remember our freedoms as Americans and those patriots who paid for those freedoms. I wonder just what George, Ben and young Thomas Jefferson would say or think if they got a glimpse of America today. Hmmm…maybe in another newsletter.

One of the freedoms we have as Americans is to own and operate our own business…free enterprise, the American way. This summer make a conscious effort to support your neighbors and shop at the local businesses in your community. If we don’t, small businesses like the summers filled with days at the creek and roller skating at the park, will become a thing of the past…

Call us at 610.821.1051, or shop online at michaelthomasfloral.com for all your floral needs.

May your Fourth of July and your summer be a safe and enjoyable one. I hope your summer memories are as nostalgic as mine.

Happy July!

When I woke up this morning, the TV stations were all tuned in to their coverage of The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I had tuned in to see the flowers, the bouquets and the decorations, as all good florists would. They were elegant and understated. The thing that I found most intriguing, were the lady’s hats. Each one created with style and grace; chosen to enhance the dress or gown they had picked out to wear. Outside of the Kentucky Derby, when and where was the last time we saw hats worn by this many ladies in public, in the USA…maybe at a ‘Red Hat’ luncheon? I also though to myself, who would have to marry whom in the United States, to garner such interest and global media coverage? Maybe a major sports figure or superstar…how long would that last? I know there are some big prominent families, but none can rival those at the wedding of a British Royal. Sending all the best to England’s future King and his new bride, The Duchess of Cambridge.

May begins the wedding season in the flower shop. Bouquets of fragrant roses, full lush hydrangea, elegant lilies, orchids and stephanotis are being prepared for our princess brides. There will be bouquets for bridesmaids and flower girls, boutonnieres for the gentlemen and corsages for the ladies, as well as decorations for the ceremonies and receptions. We always look forward to “The Wedding Season” at Michael Thomas Floral Design Studio.

The biggest day for flowers in May, is without a doubt, Mother’s Day. This year Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to say ‘Thank You’ and ‘I Love You’ to your mom. She has always done her best to give you everything she could. We will be featuring the freshest vase arrangements, beautiful baskets of spring flowers, full and lush hanging baskets, as well as many other selections to choose from.

Call us early at 610.821.1051, or go to our website at www.michaelthomasfloral.com to place your order. We will be open on Sunday, May 8th for your convenience.

At the end of May we commemorate the soldiers, airmen and sailors who made the ultimate sacrifices for our freedom. Memorial Day is Monday, May 30th. Please take the time this month to remember those who fought for our liberty and remember to thank our mother’s. Best wishes to the brides and grooms as they start their lives together, may they live happily ever after! Our flowers can help you honor each of these occasions with beauty and grace – created especially for you at Michael Thomas Floral Design Studio.

Happy May!!
